Home Security Systems: Wired or Wireless?

by Jeffrey Parker

How safe is your house? The question seems simple at first, but chances are your house is not quite as secure as you would like to believe it is. All home security systems are not created equal. Some will protect your home better than others. With all the different options, however, it can be difficult to determine which system is right for you. With some research, however, this question will not be a problem.

Many homeowners wonder whether they should invest in wireless or hard wired home security systems. There is no one simple answer. It depends on how your home was built, if you have experience with security systems, and the amount of money you wish to spend on the system.

Wired home security systems may prove the better option for those in the process of building a home. For homes already built, the installation of a wired system requires extra time and expense associated with running the wires through the walls, and other physical work necessary to accommodate the various components. Thus, wireless systems may be the better option for pre-existing homes. Less expensive than wired systems, wireless systems are also relatively easy to install.

The wireless home security alarm system, by contrast, does not require you to drill holes or plan the setup beforehand. Once your security system is set up, it will require less maintenance than a wired system. They are generally more advanced in technology than wired systems, and with add-ons such as wireless security cameras, can create a truly secure environment for your household.

Wireless home security systems have their own limitations. They may be limited in their range. This is not necessarily the case, as each home is different. Whether or not a wireless system is right for you depends on your particular home and how the network will be set up.

Wireless security systems are becoming very popular. While a wired home security alarm system usually needs to be installed by a professional, a wireless system can be installed simply as a DIY project.

Commonly, each device in a wireless home security system includes a built in transmitter. The transmitter sends a wireless signal to the central control receiver. The less expensive systems will only sound an alarm when an intrusion is detected, while the higher priced security systems will indicate which device was triggered.

Ultimately, the security system you choose will depend upon your home system. Among the factors you should consider are whether you are constructing an entirely new house or renovating an existing house, whether you have a great deal of money to spend or a limited budget, and whether you have had good experiences with security systems in the past. However, no matter what type of system you settle on, the result will be a significant improvement to your family’s safety.
