Jennifer is relatively new to Excel and asks about using the Insert Name dialog. Any time that you are in the RefEdit field and hit a left or right arrow key to move within the formula, Excel starts inserting cell addresses. Episode 971 shows you how to turn off that annoying behavior.

Today's question is from Jennifer.
Jennifer admits that she's relatively new to Excel.
And using excel for seven months and has a problem that is near and dear to my heart because it used to drive me crazy.
She's in the insert name dialog box and down here in this refers to...
How many times you've been in this refers to and you realize that you have to edit a character?
And so of course instinctively you reach for the left arrow key, or the right arrow key and all of a sudden Excel starts inserting Sheet names or something like that.
Very very frustrating to have this happen.
S,o you're trying to go back to the left and it starts inserting cells.
And just horrible!
Alright!
Okay! So, here's the solution when you're in that box, I want you to look in the lower left-hand corner of the entire spreadsheet down here where it says ready.
So, I click in the box and it changes the point.
We can change that status by pressing the F2 key.
So, I press the F2 key.
I get back to edit mode and check this out.
When I'm in Edit mode, I can use the left arrow key and the right arrow key to move within that text and not point to any new cells.
So, you can change F2 from Edit to Enter.
I'm just using pressing F2.
Once will allow you to move in that text box.
There's a few other places where this happens.
You know you hit left arrow key, and it starts inserting cell addresses.
I'll just press the F2 key.
Great solution!
I remember someone along the way sent an email and told me how to solve that problem.
And that really has ended my frustrations with that dialog box.
Hey, I want to thank you for Thanks for stopping by.
We'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
