Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast. This is episode number 700.
Now since we started numbering at 101. This is actually our 600th episode.
Want to send a thank you out to Leo Laporte.
Leo is the guy who many summers ago said.
Hey you know you should do an excel podcast. Want to thank him.
I know that Leo and **** debartolo just passed episode number 500 about a month ago on their daily giz wiz podcasts, and so it's kind of cool when you're doing these daily podcast, your numbers really get up there.
I'm starting to realize that I'm going to be in trouble. Just another 300 episodes and I'm going to run out of digits.
I should have used a four digit numbering sheme or maybe used a five-digit numbering scheme if I plan to do this forever.
Today though I want to talk about taking excel data and moving it to a map.
So here I have a customer list and do you notice there's a zip code field.
So I'm going to close this "File" "Close".
And we're going to switch over to a product called microsoft mappoint.
This is a separate product you can buy when you use "Data" "Import Data Wizard" and choose that recent file "Podcast700" and it detects the zip code field.
If I had a street address city and state field it would detect that as well.
We'll Click finish and excel will go through a process called "Geocoding" that's where it assigns a latitude and longitude to every zip code.
I can choose many different kinds of maps, but in this case. I'm just going to choose a pushpin.
And we'll choose which pushpin to use, I'll use a red circle and click finish.
Now ecxel just zoomed in on northeast, Ohio here, and shows me the extent of my customers.
If I needed to I could zoom in and you know see a specific range, which is very cool.
If you have street level data you can get right down to the neighborhood and see where your customers are coming from or we can zoom out and see the entire region and kind of understand where people are coming from to get to our store.
A Very cool product and I have a great offer for you, I'm going to ask you to drop me an email to bill@Mr.ExCel.com If you're in the United States just give me your zip code.
If you are elsewhere, give me the country and any postal code and we'll try and plug all that data in on a map.
So let's give you two weeks. We'll say through March 14th and then on March 15th, I'll record a podcast will take a look at where people are listening from and also, choose one of those people to win a free copy of microsoft mappoint direct from the microsoft store.
I want to thank you for stopping by and I want to thank you for your support and for watching the netcast.
Hopefully will be around for many more netcast to come.
