Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast, I'm Bill Jelen.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays we're going to start to take a look at Excel 2007, this is the brand-new version of Excel that will be out on retail shelves at the end of January.
However, large customers who subscribed at MSDN can already have this version on their desktops right now.
Excel 2007 is the best new version of Excel to come out, ever, but the one big thing that’s really going to be confusing in Excel 2007, is the new Ribbon.
The ribbon is a very frustrating piece of real estate at the top, because it takes up a lot of space, and they basically done away with the old menu system in Excel 2003.
File, Edit View, Insert, Tools is gone, and replaced by the ribbon.
The frustrating thing with the ribbon is that all the commands are there, however they're broken up into different chunks.
So for example, the Home ribbon has a lot of the things that used to be on the Formatting toolbar.
The Insert ribbon is where you get to Pivot tables, Charts, Hyperlinks and things like that.
The Data ribbon is where you'll do a lot of the subtotals, sorting Text to Columns and other things.
Well, you know, the frustrating thing about the ribbon is it's always up there, taking up a lot of space.
One great trick is if you right-click the ribbon and choose Minimize the Ribbon, then what happens is the ribbon basically goes away, and just have the ribbon tabs.
So let's say that we need to sort something, we can actually open the Data tab, click the A-Z button to sort, and when we're done Excel then minimizes the ribbon.
The ribbon is frustrating for a couple of reasons: the first one is, the first couple of days you're using Excel 2007, you can't find anything.
But the other reason is that it's taking up a lot of space at the top of the worksheet.
Using Minimize the Ribbon, you basically get to put the ribbon away all the time, until you go ahead and access it.
So right-click the ribbon, choose Minimize the Ribbon, and it'll take up less space.
