MrExel podcast is sponsored by Easy-XL Learn excel from MrExcel podcast 1391 Message Board Well, hey I want to send a shout out to Mrs. Schleuter's 7th grade computer apps class at West Branch High School in Ohio. The West Branch Warriors.
I know Mrs. Schleuter and she recently sent me a note.
Her class was just in excel and the students wanted to see how big the excel spreadsheet was so they went all the way down to the bottom all the way out to the right out to XFD. 1048576.
and the question came up. Well, how many columns is that and Mrs.Sschluter did very interesting thing. she went out to MrExcel.com and she went to the message board.
At the message board she registered, it's free to register and she posted her question there.
she explained that she's a teacher of 7th grade computer apps class and you know around 2:30 she posted this and within a few minutes she had several different ways of solving this problem.
About three different ways from various folks who came along and so her class figured out all three of these ways and got the same answer in each case.
16384 alright so our podcast today isn't so much about how many columns there are in excel or how many rows are in excel.
We'll talk about that you know every once a while I show my email address bill@MrExcel.com and I said if you have an idea for the podcast send that in. But let me explain something.
So that address bill@MrExcel.com is for podcast questions.
And you'll see you know. I show up here, I record 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 podcats all in a row and then I don't think about podcast for a week or 2 weeks and every once in a while, I go over that podcast computer over there, and I feel bad because there's someone who says oh, I need help immediately.
And I haven't looked at questions for a week or two so bill@MrExcel.com is not a good way to get your help answered immediately.
The message board at MrExcel.
It's absolutely free. Post your question there and you'll have a conversation with folks from around the world.
These were folks in England and Saint Louis and San Diego, California helped out Mrs.Schleuter and her class from West Branch high school.
Well let's talk about how many columns are in excel. You know my cheating way of doing this, let's make the screen smaller so you can see the whole excel screen, is I hold on shift key and just start selecting and see right there says one row by three columns.
That's a nice little tip and if you get out far enough, it actually becomes a little tool tip there.
So you want to go almost all the way out to the end.
I want to do Ctrl+shift+right arrow and then come back One and we'll see 16 383 and one more than that would be 16 384 so that's one method of doing it.
If you actually select the whole thing then it just says that you have three rows all right So you want to go just one try out that.
So that's a quick way of seeing how many columns are the other way is just to do =COLUMN of this cell that cell out here XFD1 and that'd work 16384 and it's interesting that number is =2^14 14 power, 16384 and the number of rows, well that's easy because you can just see it down there 1048576 that number is =2^20 So excel number of rows number of columns have always been power of 2.
It's just kind of funny that ends up as XFD out there. Hey, so a shout out to again, Mr.Shleuter and her computer apps class.
Love to see people in 7th grade starting to use excel. That's good You're going to have a great job prospect when you get out of college and you go out have 10 years of excel experience under your belt.
So keep that up.Hey well I want to thank you for stopping by. See you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
