Learn Excel from MrExcel podcast, episode 1754 - The Excel Daily Newspaper, a Book Giveaway, and trending XL topics!
Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast, I'm Bill Jelen.
A couple of interesting things that we're working on here lately, and want you to check them out, let me know what you think.
First one is The Excel Daily, this is a newspaper that's going to come out every day, it shows the best articles and videos about Excel from the past day.
So it's just kind of a curation of things there.
That URL will be right down in the description beneath this video, check it out.
Also, a couple of other things, Mike's book is coming out soon, Goodreads is giving away 10 free autographed copies, so this URL will also be there in the description.
The copies are only, let's see, two days, I think, basically Saturday, yes Saturday at midnight, there's 10 copies, you want to enter to win, and also if you want to help Mike out if you're a Goodreads member, come here and click the Want to Read button, that will boost Mike's book in the trending topics.
The other thing, you know that we have the MrExcel message board which is very active, lots of different discussions going on there every day, the community at MrExcel answers 30.000 questions.
I started a new blog post each day that rounds up the top 10 topics from the previous day.
I'll put this URL there too, so if you don't have time to go read all the topics that get posted, but are looking for the ones that attracted a lot of attention, we'll be posting this out to the blog every day.
And then finally an Excel trick, wouldn't be a MrExcel podcast without an Excel trick.
I was watching Twitter last night, and someone needed to do first name and last initial, and then someone else needed to convert formulas to values.
And boy, I could not find the video that does formulas to values using the drag and drop method, so.
Obviously, I haven't done it in ~800 episodes' time to do it again.
First off, our formula that we have here is the PROPER(A2&" "&LEFT(B2,1)) to pull that off.
But then, if you need to delete columns A and B, and you want to just have column C, we need to convert those formulas to values.
And yes, there's 7 different ways to do this, copy and paste Values.
But the way that I was trying to find last night, there's some way to do this with the mouse, and there is, you have to go to the edge of the data, you're going to right click, drag right, drag left, let go, and then Copy Here as Values Only, it will convert those formulas to values.
The trick here is, any time you right-drag a selection, you get that new menu with Copy Here as Values Only, since we want to put that data right back on top of itself, that's why we right click, right drag, left drag, and let go, Copy Here as Values Only.
Cool little menu, that's called the alternate drag and drop menu, great trick I learned that in Columbus, IN from Dave in the front row, one of my seminars there.
Alright, so a couple things to check out, URLs are right below this video, The Excel Daily, let me know what you think, hot topics at the MrExcel message board, and don't forget to enter to win Mike's book, ten copies.
Hey, I want to thank you for stopping by, we'll you next time for another netcast from MrExcel!
