Wrap up to Excel 2010 chapter 11: Quick Stats.
Oh, hey, alright! Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast. I'm Bill Jelen.
I've got a math question for today. I will choose themselves. Here just you can see the screen.
Look at the screen. Tell me what the total those cells are?
Time's up! What do you get?
Who has nine point eight?
Yeah! 9.8 is it. How can you tell him?
I am really good at math.
Did I add it up beforehand? No!
Anytime you have more than one numeric cell selected, look right down here in the status bar and it shows you the total of the selected cell. Now, that's been there forever. In the past, you could right click and change it to another statistic. Now in Excel 2010, right click and you can choose to show the Max, the Min, the Count, the Numerical Count and the Average. Show them all and certain time you have more than one numeric cell. I get to see them in the Max, the Average. The whole bit down there.
Great way to quickly do some math without doing any formulas. I also have a another use for this.
I have some VLOOKUPS. Here, I'm gonna sum that column.
Let's do that first.
Oh, N/As that means somewhere in that column I am getting an N/A.
Our result, well, here's one way to find it.
You could always sort descending, Z to A.
The N/As will come to the top but I'm just going to hold down the shift key and i'm going to do page down. All right, you see the total is still there, means I haven't hit an N/A yet. Page Down, total is still there ,haven't hit an N/A yet. Page Down, Page Down, Page Down, Page Down, Page Down, oop! Just passed one.
Now I can page up and bam! There's the N/A.
Item missing from the lookup table. I can fix that. So a great way to quickly scan through a column them look for the N/As as soon as you see the quick sum go away. You know, you just passed one.
Again, you could sort but you know, sometimes just a quick way to locate the one or two N/As.
I wanna thank you for stopping by. We'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
