Good morning all,

I have had a troll through the search bar but cant find anything to suit my needs. I have this data in excel which is the perimeter details of a house slab (starting and finishing at 0,0) Which gives me a total perimeter of 77.76 meters using {=SUM(ABS(B4:B25))} as a formula.

6.020
-6.090
-2.200
-2.860
0.840
-1.300
-0.840
-4.240
-8.510
3.870
-3.500
2.900
-5.570
0.510
-3.770
7.210
17.530

The question is can I also get an area from these figures?

Thanks heaps.

What are those numbers, the lengths of perimeter segments? If so, no, you cannot get the area from them as there are infinitely many figures that can be made with segments of those lengths. However, if you have the x,y coordinates for the nodes those perimeter segments were calculated from, then yes, you can calculate the area from those node coordinates.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the reply.

They are segments of the slab perimeter but I have based them on X/Y coordinates. (Positive figures up and right, negative figures down and left) By adding the figures in absolutes I get the perimeter whereas in a standard calculation I get zero (if I don't get zero then the slab calculation is out) The figures above are in Meters eg 6.02m, -6.09m, -2.20m -2.86m etc.

Where are your node coordinates located... In a worksheet (if so, which one and what range)? In a VBA array (if so, show the code that creates the array and stores the values in it)?

I don't quite get what you mean by nodes? I'm thinking they are the intersections of adjoining lines. I'm trying to attach the plan that relates to the posted data - to show an outcome of 242.97 m2 but I cant attach a .pdf file.

My data shown above is entered into A4:A30

Yes, the intersection points of the lines making up the perimeter segments (that is, the "angle points" in the figure) are called the nodes... I need the coordinates for them in order to calculate the area. You don't have to show me a picture, just tell me where you have them located at?

Does the OP data mean
Go right 6.020
Go up -6.090
Go Right -2.200
Go up -2.860
Go Right 0.840
Go up -1.300
Go Right -0.840
Go up-4.240
...

Which would mean that you have nodes at

(0,0), (6.02,0) (6.02,-6.02) (3.82,-6.02), etc

So I think you are telling me I need to include (on the worksheet) the X-Y Coordinates of my drawing lines to look like this.

Line Length X-Y
0,0
6.02 0,6.02
-6.09 6.02,-6.09
-2.02 3.82,-6.09
-2.86 3.82,-8.95

Is this correct?

Yes that's getting it

Go right 6.020 (Side of garage)
Go DOWN -6.090
Go LEFT -2.200
Go DOWN -2.860
Go LEFT 0.840
Go DOWN -1.300
Go Right -0.840
Go DOWN-4.240

And that's the front elevation of the house

Ok so now I first have to figure out how to have a "running Tally" of X-Y coordinates based on my first lot of data adding and subtracting itself based on X or Y direction. Any ideas?

Thank for your help by the way.
