Learn Excel Podcast. I'm Bill Jelen. I'm here in Seattle.
and I'm trying to gather some of the famous people that are out here for the MVP summit and I have with me I have Antroy who is the world's foremost expert in Microsoft word.
She's laughing but she really is.
You should check out her book "DREAMBOAT ON WORD".
We sell it at MrExcel and so I've asked Ant and even though this isn't excel, one of the things that is really frustrating for me and word is I'll have something nicely formatted.
I'll change one character and all of a sudden format of the whole paragraph changes.
Ant's going to tell us why that happens?
Hi, everybody the reason that that happens is because of formatting.
If you take a paragraph or two of text. We're going to type =rand () and hit enter.
and that gives us some sample text to work with.
Now I work with the show/hide button on and that is the paragraph marker symbol. It's called a pilcrow.
Right there, and we're going to hit that button to turn that on.
we get to see the paragraph markers and little dots between the words which are spaces and you can see that tabs are little arrows and things like that.
There's different characters for the different non-printable items.
I have a question, Ant, those prints, those are ugly. I don't want those in my document.
They don't print no, but Jelen and I were just discussing last night how someone who's really good in word we'll want to keep that term going.
It'll teach you more about word because now I can go up and If I, a lot of people will, you know select some text.
Shift end and bold it but the problem is that doing so can format your whole paragraph to be bolded.
If you choose the paragraph marker and will go like this We'll hit end and we'll hit enter and we don't understand why the next text that we type is bold?
and the reason is the paragraph marker was bolded.
So we'll go up here and hit shift and we'll bold this and we notice that when we hit end and hit enter we do not get bold text again.
But if you select paragraph marker at the end, text will be bold.
Paragraph formatting is stored in the paragraph marker. We choose to delete the text that's bolded or even some of it and very often you'll find that it'll delete all of the formatting.
The newer versions of word are better at it than they used to be.
But styles are definitely applied to paragraph formatting.
The difference is the character formatting and paragraph formatting and you'll see here, this little button tells us whether it's a character format or paragraph format.
The ones with the paragraph symbols behind them like heading 1 2 and 3 are paragraph formats, but the bold is not.
Isn't that cool? All right.
You like that? That's awesome.
All right..
Hey, All right .
Well thanks to Antroy.
Remember to check out her book DREAMBOAT ON WORD.
It's available at amazon.com or MrExel.
and want to thank Ant for giving us that word tip.
Catch you next time for another tip from MrExcel.
you
